What’s the deal with CBD and Covid-19?

Short answer? We’ll see. But the studies are coming out, and they are promising. Or not. It depends….

Check out this article by Forbes. It focuses on a study released in Jan 2022 from Oregon State University. That report on the research was published by Journal of Natural Products under the title, “Cannabinoids Block Cellular Entry of SARS-CoV-2 and the Emerging Variants.”

It is finally January 2022 (so long, 2021!), and perhaps the entire world is looking for a way out of Covid-19. Too many deaths, too much sickness, too much…everything. Researchers do what they do best: ask and answer questions. In this case, the question asked and answered was, can cannabis prevent Covid-19? If so, how?

While more research is needed, it’s looking good that the compounds in cannabis can block the virus’s entry into cells and as a result, prevent infection from the virus that’s currently wreaking havoc on the world. Specifically, the research shows that cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, or CBDA, can bind to the spike protein of the virus that causes Covid-19 and stop its entry into cells. This might lead to ways to prevent and treat the disease, as well as providing a means to repel or shorten infections by even future variants.

The terrific news is that CBGA and CBDA are very common and very available. They are also considered to be very safe for humans, and are non-psychoactive. Researchers indicated that  the cannabinoids could be developed into drugs to prevent or treat Covid-19. That doesn’t mean resistant variants will be stamped out, but it does provide hope.

Other studies also come to the same results: that cannabidiol from the cannabis plant has potential to prevent and inhibit infection, even from the early stages. Administering CBD is associated with a lower risk of Covid-19 infections in humans using the same active compound found in CBD used to treat epilepsy. These researchers also speculate that CBD may have efficacy against new viruses coming about in the future.

There are some researchers focusing on the treatment of “Long Covid,” which requires ongoing treatment and support for those who have contracted the virus and have experienced lingering effects. For example, one ongoing study recognizes that CBD has long been used to treat symptoms associated with Long Covid, including fatigue, pain, sleep issues, inflammation and breathlessness. Researchers wish to establish if it is even feasible to recruit patients into a trial of CBD, as well as ascertain side effects and safety of medicinal cannabis.

And even though there are studies that say CBD is not effective for Covid-19 recovery, even the researchers admit that a 14-day trial of only 300 mg of CBD might be too short a duration with too low a dose. By comparison, the lowest full spectrum CBD offered by Reward is 1000 mg. These researchers were prudent to recommend higher doses for future trials.

All the world will keep watching and waiting to see what the next round of research holds in the fight against Covid-19. But while you’re watching and waiting, why not try regular doses of CBD, just in case? It can only help, and who knows? You might be ahead of the research!
